Tuberous Breasts

Our Brisbane plastic surgeon offers surgical treatment for tuberous breasts; this is a condition in which the breasts are long and narrow, often with nipples and areolas that are pointed and enlarged. It is also common for tuberous breasts to be far apart, asymmetrical, and different sizes. The cause of tuberous breasts remains unclear, but surgeons have documented several common characteristics between cases. The inframmary fold (the bottom of the breast, where it meets the chest wall) is abnormally high, resulting in a small amount of breast tissue. This also results in disproportionate pressure in the breast, which can cause the nipples to become large and misshapen.
Pre-operative Consultations
Fortunately, treatments exist that can alter the shape and contour of tuberous breasts. If you have tuberous breasts, breast surgery can help you achieve your goals. Correcting tuberous breasts requires a highly individualised treatment plan. Any number of breast surgery techniques may be combined to achieve the results you desire. During your initial consultation with your surgeon, you should not hesitate to ask any and all questions you may have, and to voice all of your concerns.
Breast Augmentation Mammoplasty
For many of our patients in Brisbane, breast augmentation mammoplasty is performed with the aim to achieve patients’ desired breast size and shape. During your consultation, you can decide what size and shape of implant will suit your needs. Our patients can choose between silicone and saline implants, round or teardrop-shaped implants, and small or large-sized implants.
Breast Lift Mastopexy
Surgery may also involve elements of a breast lift (mastopexy). Some glandular tissue may be removed, along with any excess skin. The mastopexy technique that is employed during your surgery will be pre-determined during your consultation. If possible, Dr. Philip Richardson will limit the mastopexy incision to the area around the areola to limit scarring. This is often done in combination with breast augmentation mammoplasty.
Nipple Surgery
Because constricted skin is one of the fundamental causes of tuberous breasts, surgery often involves creating an incision around the areola (the soft skin surrounding the nipple) to release the skin and breast. As the constriction is released, the breast tissue will naturally splay into a more conventional layout. If needed, the areola itself may be reduced or repositioned.
