Liposuction is a surgical technique to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body, most commonly the abdomen, hips, and thighs. Dr. Richardson generally only performs liposuction as a supplementary technique to a surgical procedure such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction). Liposuction is not a a substitute for weight reduction, but a method for removing localised deposits of fatty tissue that do not respond to diet or exercise. The best candidates are those who are of relatively normal weight who have excess fat in particular areas. Hanging skin will not reshape itself to the new contours and this requires surgical techniques such as abdominoplasty to amend. Liposuction will also not improve areas of dimpled skin known as “cellulite”, or improve muscle tone if the underlying muscles are weak.

Liposuction is performed using a hollow metal surgical instrument known as a cannula that is inserted through small skin incision(s) and is passed back and forth through the area of fatty deposit. The cannula is attached to a vacuum source which provides the suction needed to remove the fatty tissue. There are a variety of different techniques used by plastic surgeons for liposuction and care following surgery. Liposuction may be performed under local or general anaesthesia. Tumescent liposuction technique involves the infiltration of fluid containing dilute local anaesthetic and adrenalin into areas of fatty deposits. This technique can help reduce discomfort at the time of surgery, as well as reduce post-operative bruising. Support garments and dressings are worn to control swelling and promote healing. You will usually be fitted with a post-operative compression garment to assist in recovery.
We offer a lifetime follow-up guarantee with zero out-of-pocket expenses to ensure we are providing ongoing exceptional care to our patients. Following your surgery you should go home and rest. It is important that you take it easy and avoid strenuous activities for 6 weeks. Normal activities can be resumed after the first couple of weeks. Following liposuction, you will experience blood stained ooze from the incision sites, with the first 24-48 hours being the heaviest. this is to be expected and the support garment should be left on during this time. The support garment should be worn day and night for 6 weeks, but can be removed when showering. Bruising will present itself in various colours and degrees of severity, as will swelling. It will generally take 6-8 weeks before the full benefits of the procedure are visible and usually 6 months to see the final results.
1-2 weeks following surgery you can commence massaging. This can be done professionally or by using a rolling pin and rolling over the affected areas for 10 minutes, twice a day.
