Gynaecomastia, is an enlargement or excessive development of the male breast, affecting the appearance and shape of the chest and can develop in one breast (unilaterally) or in both breasts (bilaterally).

Gynaecomastia, or male breast development is common in men of any age and may develop as a result of:

• Hormonal changes or imbalance
• Weight gain
• Hereditary conditions
• Disease, such as liver disease

• Use of non-prescription or recreational drugs, including anabolic steroids and marijuana

Excess breast tissue may also cause a man’s breasts to hang lower and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple).

General anaesthetic is normally administered before male breast reduction (gynaecomastia) surgery so that the patient will not experience any discomfort during gynaecomastia treatment at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery.
