Recovery After Breast Reduction Surgery

recovery

Various surgical procedures are available for those looking to alter their physical appearance. In certain cases, lifestyle changes alone may not meet an individual’s expectations for their body’s appearance, especially regarding breast size. Excessively large breasts can contribute to physical discomfort and a disproportionate appearance.

At our Brisbane clinic, we assess whether breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, could be beneficial. This overview provides insight into what individuals can anticipate during the recovery phase.

Outcomes of Breast Reduction Surgery

Reduction mammoplasty involves the removal of excess skin and tissue to adjust the breast size and shape. This procedure aims to achieve a breast size more in proportion to an individual’s body, potentially alleviating discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

Preparation for Breast Reduction Surgery

Candidates for reduction mammoplasty are advised to avoid alcohol and tobacco products prior to surgery, as these can impact the healing process. It is also recommended to have prescriptions filled beforehand and to arrange transportation and post-operative support from friends or family, as driving and certain activities will be restricted immediately following the procedure.

On the Day of Surgery

Comfort should be the priority on the day of surgery. We advise wearing loose clothing and avoiding makeup and jewelry to facilitate a stress-free experience.

Initial Recovery Phase

The initial days post-surgery are critical for recovery. It is normal to experience some discomfort and tiredness. Rest and hydration are important, as is wearing a supportive surgical bra, which may be necessary for several weeks to aid in shaping during the healing process.

Should any significant pain, discomfort, or signs of complications arise, contact our office immediately for guidance.

Subsequent Weeks

Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities, particularly those involving bending or lifting. Driving is often discouraged for at least one week post-surgery to avoid any undue pressure on the healing tissues.

Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled for one week, six weeks, six months, and one year post-surgery to monitor recovery and address any concerns.
