Breast Augmentation Mammoplasty
Dr. Philip Richardson is a specialist plastic surgeon who focuses much of his practice around breast augmentation mammoplasty surgery in Brisbane. He has performed over 8,500 cosmetic breast procedures in the past decade, and has over 20 years experience as a practising surgeon.
Breast augmentation mammoplasty, also known as breast augmentation, breast enhancement or breast enlargement surgery, uses implants to enlarge breast size or alter breast shape. The procedure can help to enlarge breast size, improve symmetry, achieve a rounded and fuller upper pole of the breast, increase fullness and projection, and address congenital conditions such as tuberous breasts.
Whether you are seeking a proportionate and subtle appearance or a noticeable enhancement, Dr. Richardson is able to tailor his surgical technique and implant choice to address these desires. Dr. Richardson is committed to helping women achieve their aesthetic goals with breast implants using best practice safety measures in fully-accredited hospitals in QLD.

At your initial consultation with Brisbane plastic surgeon Dr. Philip Richardson, you will be greeted by our lovely reception staff who will provide you will a patient registration form and take any reports or referral letters. We will be available in the waiting room to answer any questions you have about potential surgery, dates or booking information. Dr. Richardson will then invite you into your consultation, where you will take time to discuss your goals and reasons for attending the clinic.
Your consultation with Dr. Richardson is an opportunity to thoroughly discuss what you want to achieve from your breast augmentation mammoplasty and formulate a treatment plan to suit these goals. Dr. Richardson seeks to understand each patient’s unique lifestyle so that he can tailor their surgical plan accordingly. The type of implant and the implant placement may vary according to patient hobbies, occupation, plans for future children, and other lifestyle considerations. You will discuss with Dr. Richardson your desired breast shape and size, and he will take your medical history and measurements. It’s very helpful if patients bring photos with inspiration of their desired breast aesthetic, as this helps to place both patient and surgeon on the same page, as an ‘enhanced’ aesthetic for one patient, may be vastly different to that of another.
After you have thoroughly discussed your goals and Dr. Richardson has an understanding of what you would like to achieve, he will provide a number of recommendations relating to the type of implant including size, shape, and profile, as well as the placement of the implant and surgical technique. Dr. Richardson strives to provide you with the highest level of support and guidance to ensure you are comfortable with whatever decision you make, and that you are choosing the most appropriate option for you. At your initial consultation you will be able to try on a number of trial implants in a sports bra to gauge the feeling of each size and profile. You will not make any concrete decisions at this appointment, but Dr. Richardson will write down your potential implant options which you can trial again at your second consult.
Dr. Richardson will then confirm your surgical procedure, discuss the operation and recovery, and educate you thoroughly regarding the risks associated with the procedure. Once you are fully satisfied and feel all your questions have been answered, Dr. Richardson will then guide you out to our patient liaison, who will help you take the next steps in your journey and answer any additional questions you may have. We will have a chat to you about when you are considering surgery, provide you with your personal quote and additional pertinent details of your surgical procedure to assist and ensure you can make an informed decision. For patients who may be ready to book in as soon as possible, we will schedule your required second consultation with Dr. Richardson to confirm your treatment plan before we can secure your surgery date. For other patients who may have a specific time frame in mind according to their annual leave and personal circumstances, we can provide you with a number of hospital quotes for your desired time period to help you make the best decision for you. You will be sent home on your consultation day with a gift bag that includes our comprehensive BPCS magazine that is an intensive guide from consultation to post-op care. The rest of the team are here to answer any questions you may have and ensure that you feel completely prepared to make a decision!
Dr. Richardson recommends Motiva implants to nearly all of his patients. These are smooth surface, silicone gel implants that come in a large variety of sizes and profiles to cater to the needs of every woman. The main advantage of Motiva breast implants when compared to other brands, is from a safety perspective. The capsular contracture rate for Motiva is less than 1%, and with a smooth surface, there is no cited link between these implants and ALCL, which is a concern associated with textured implants. The second advantage is from an aesthetic perspective.
Motiva provides over 500 breast implant shape, sizes, and profiles to create either more noticeable or more subtle looking breasts according to your preference. Each implant moulds to the natural shape of the breast, and can provide lower and upper pole fullness dependant on the patient’s desires.
Breast augmentation mammoplasty with Dr. Philip Richardson is always performed at a fully accredited hospital under general anaesthetic with a qualified anaesthetist and surgical assistance team. Dr. Richardson operates out of South Bank Day Hospital, Westside Private Hospital, North Lakes Day Surgery, and St Andrews War Memorial Hospital. It’s extremely important that breast augmentation mammoplasty is performed at a fully-accredited hospital as this is an invasive procedure that carries a number of surgical risks. Dr. Richardson has worked alongside his anaesthetists for over 20 years and places the utmost trust in these professionals who are responsible for your safety under general anaesthetic.
The surgery itself involves the placement of the breast implants either behind the breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle. Once inserted, the breast implants will push or help lift the breast tissue forward, making the breasts appear larger and fuller. The entire breast augmentation mammoplasty surgery will take approximately 90 minutes, and in most cases, patients will be sent home the same day. When you wake up in recovery, you will have your post-op bra on and will be given some food and time to rest and recover before your carer comes to collect you. Upon your departure, the recovery nurses at the hospital will go through your post-op bag with you. This post-op bag is provided by Dr. Richardson and includes all your medications and a comprehensive post-op magazine that is your guide to recovery.
Patients should allow one to two weeks for recovery after breast augmentation mammoplasty surgery before returning to work. Our nurses will contact you the day after surgery to make sure there are no complications and will schedule post-operative check-ups at regular intervals post-surgery. A post-operative bra is given to patients to wear for the first six weeks. This surgical garment supports the breasts and promotes proper healing. It is recommended that patients refrain from driving for at least two weeks after undergoing breast augmentation mammoplasty surgery and avoid partaking in rigorous exercise for at least six weeks.
Here at Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, we offer long-term follow up care and support to ensure we are providing ongoing exceptional care to our patients.
As with any surgery, there are risks involved with breast augmentation mammoplasty. The first to consider is a possible adverse response to the general anaesthetic, bruising, swelling, excessive bleeding, infection, and scarring. Other risks include capsular contracture, fluid build-up around the implant, changes in nipple sensation, implant leakage, rippling of the implant, and asymmetry. Serious adverse effects, however, are uncommon. Dr. Richardson does everything possible to prevent and treat negative side effects, and this will be discussed at your consultation. We place a large emphasis on educating patients regarding potential risks to ensure both parties are taking all measures to prevent and understand them.
