Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
Brisbane plastic surgeon Dr. Richardson has performed over 8,000 breast procedures in the past decade and has extensive experience performing breast lift mastopexy surgery in Brisbane hospitals. Whether due to pregnancy, dramatic weight loss, or natural ageing processes, a woman’s breasts may begin to show the effects of ptosis (breast sag). As a result, some women choose to undergo breast lift mastopexy surgery to help raise and reposition their breasts to their desired size, shape and position. With these patients in mind, Dr. Richardson offers breast lift mastopexy surgery at our Brisbane, Queensland plastic surgery practice.
Mastopexy surgery, also known as Breast lift surgery, is performed to alter the shape and raise breasts to address breast contour, increase firmness, raise the position of the areola complex, and if required – reduce the size of the areolas. During a breast lift mastopexy procedure, skin is removed to tighten the surrounding breast tissue in order to alter the shape and support the breast. Dr. Philip Richardson takes a unique approach with each breast lift mastopexy procedure to the unique and individual needs and aesthetic goals of each patient. For women who would like to increase the size of or add volume to their breasts, Dr. Richardson can combine a mastopexy procedure with breast augmentation mammoplasty.
If you would like to find out whether you are a suitable candidate for breast lift mastopexy surgery at our practice serving the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, and communities throughout Queensland, please schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Richardson.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks and before proceeding, you should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner such as Dr Richardson.
A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that raises and firms the breasts. The procedure involves tightening the breast tissue and removing skin to alter the shape and support a new breast contour, achieving a more firm and raised breast appearance. The internal breast tissue is generally altered during this process too.
A breast lift mastopexy procedure can also reduce the size of the areola (the skin surrounding the nipple), which can become enlarged over time.
What breast lift mastopexy surgery won’t do:
Breast lift mastopexy surgery will not significantly change the shape and size of your breasts or round out the upper portion of your breast. If you are seeking volume and shape definition in the upper pole of the breast, a breast augmentation mammoplasty may be a suitable consideration.
At your initial consultation with Brisbane plastic surgeon Dr. Richardson, you will discuss in detail what you would like to achieve from surgery. Once Dr. Richardson has an understanding of your aesthetic goals, he will determine which breast lift mastopexy technique is best suited to your anatomy and lifestyle. Dr. Richardson can complete the breast lift mastopexy procedure using a number of methods, including the Wise pattern technique and techniques such as the Lejour and Benelli methods. Dr. Richardson discusses each of these options in detail with his patients, along with answering any questions they might have about breast surgery, during their initial consultation.
Breast lift mastopexy surgery with Dr. Richardson is always performed at a fully-accredited hospital in Brisbane under general anaesthetic.
Dr. Richardson operates from South Bank Day Hospital, North Lakes Day Surgery, and Westside Private Hospital. The operation will take approximately 90 minutes, and in most cases patients will be sent home the same day.
Our nursing team will contact patients the day after breast lift mastopexy surgery to make sure that there are no problems. Additionally, Dr. Richardson sees patients at regular intervals during their recovery from breast lift mastopexy surgery in order to check on their progress (the cost of these visits is included in the initial consultation fee). We offer a lifetime care and support service to ensure we are providing ongoing exceptional care to our patients.
Patients should wear the post-operative bra given to them for the first six weeks following surgery to ensure proper support and healing. Driving should be avoided for two weeks after surgery and rigorous exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks. You will be provided with more specific post-operative instructions in your post-op bag.
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with breast lift mastopexy surgery. These risks include those associated with all surgeries, such as a negative reaction to the general anaesthetic, infection, severe bleeding, bruising, swelling, and keloid scarring. Other risks that are specific to the breast lift procedure include asymmetry, loss of sensation to the nipple or breast skin, and bottoming out of the breast. Patients should note, however, that these effects are not common, and Dr. Richardson does everything possible to ensure a positive outcome, and educate patients regarding post-operative care and prevention.
