Surgery for Tuberous Breasts
Tuberous breast disorder, also known as “tubular breasts” and scientifically termed “breast hypoplasia” is a developmental variation of the breasts, and is typically characterised by the breasts appearing more elongated or conical in shape, rather than round.
Tuberous breasts typically do not appear to have a round shape and are commonly different on each side and can occur in one or both breasts.
While not all tuberous breast cases are obvious, patients may seek surgery to create more symmetrical and proportionate breasts, that present less tubular in appearance. There are no health issues associated with tuberous breasts and surgery can be sought for aesthetic reasons.
Tuberous breast surgery is a medical procedure and medical rebates are available.
Surgery for tuberous breasts
Surgical intervention of tubular breasts is a day procedure and should be performed under general anaesthetic administered by a qualified anaesthetist. All tuberous breast surgery should be performed at a fully-accredited hospital. Dr. Richardson operates out of four fully-accredited hospitals in Brisbane.
South Bank Day Hospital
North Lakes Day Hospital

How does tubular breast surgery work?
Tubular breast surgery can be performed using a number of techniques. These techniques include breast augmentation mammoplasty, breast lift mastopexy and augmentation mammoplasty, or breast reduction mammaplasty. All of these techniques have their unique attributes and are suitable for different patients.
How long does tuberous breast surgery take?
Tuberous breast surgery itself takes between 1 – 1.5hrs and there is generally around 5-6 hours between hospital admission and discharge. You will see from Dr. Richardson’s tubular breast before and afters on his Instagram.
What is tubular breast surgery recovery like?
Recovery after surgery for tubular breasts will depend on the specific procedure performed. As a general rule, patients should take one week off work and driving, three weeks of light exercise, and six weeks off strenuous activity. After six weeks patients should be able to return to their normal lifestyle and will be feeling well and no longer limited. The particular details of recovery can be found on either the breast augmentation mammoplasty recovery or breast lift mastopexy and augmentation mammoplasty pages.

As with any surgery, there are risks involved with a tuberous breast surgery. The first to consider is a possible adverse response to the general anaesthetic, bruising, swelling, excessive bleeding, infection, and scarring. Other risks include capsular contracture, fluid build-up around the implant, changes in nipple sensation, implant leakage, rippling of the implant, and asymmetry. Serious adverse effects, however, are very uncommon. Dr. Richardson does everything possible to prevent and treat negative side effects, and this will be discussed at your consultation. We place a large emphasis on educating patients regarding potential risks to ensure both parties are taking all measures to prevent and understand them.
