Located in the centre of your face, the nose is a prominent feature. Some men and women may desire an aesthetic change to their noses. This can be achieved with cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery. Dr Richardson is an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon in Brisbane who takes care to accommodate the needs of each individual patient.
What is Rhinoplasty?
Additionally, rhinoplasty can be performed to correct a deviated septum, which can cause breathing difficulties often resulting in loss of sleep. The procedure may also be performed as a corrective measure after melanoma removal.
Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
Individuals who are displeased with the appearance of their nose and who have reached full facial growth may be good candidates for rhinoplasty. Good candidates will be in good health and do not smoke. Dr. Richardson will meet with you for a consultation prior to the surgery to ensure you have realistic goals for your surgery.
What happens during the procedure?
Individuals who undergo rhinoplasty will be administered a general anesthetic by a trained anesthetist. The procedure will be performed as either an open approach or closed approach. Using the closed approach, tiny incisions are made inside the nose where scars are hidden. This is most often used for bridge alteration surgeries.
Depending on your needs, Dr. Richardson may also use an open approach in which an incision is made across the columella, the small strip of tissue between the nostrils. If the nostrils require reshaping, small wedge shaped strips of tissue will be removed.
Through the incisions, the skin is gently raised to allow Dr. Richardson to alter the structure of the nose as needed. If necessary, bone or cartilage may be removed for the desired reshaping. Alternatively, cartilage may be inserted into the nose for the reshaping. This cartilage is typically derived from the ear or a section of the rib cartilage. Once the desired shape is achieved, the incisions are closed with sutures. The nose will be covered with gauze and a splint for support as it heals.
What can I expect after the procedure is complete?
Minor swelling and bruising are expected following the procedure. Dr. Richardson will provide you with detailed instructions for care before you leave. Some patients may experience headaches and nasal congestion following the surgery and medication can be prescribed as necessary. After the first week, the splint and sutures will be removed. Activities should be limited for at least six weeks. Strenuous activities should be completely avoided for the first 2-3 weeks but light activity can resume after one week.
