Advances in breast implant technology have increased the longevity of implants. Innovation has helped patients enjoy their breast augmentation results for years and decades. However, some individuals may have specific lifestyle circumstances or rare complications that cause them to remove their breast implants. Reasons might include undesirable aesthetic changes, complications such as implant rupture, or simple change-of-mind. Regardless of the exact reason for wanting to remove your breast implants, this blog is for you.
Why do women remove breast implants?
There are several conditions that signal a need to remove breast implants. The first is general changes in the breast. Breast tissue can fluctuate, and skin integrity can weaken over time. As a result, the breast can begin to sag and appear wrinkled. The result is generally a more visible or misshapen implant. This may cause a patient to seek removal and replacement to restore the shape of her breasts. She may opt for a breast lift to restore shape and symmetry. In some cases, the patient may want to remove breast implants altogether.
Some women may suffer from capsular contracture. This condition occurs when the breast tissue develops a ring of scar tissue around the implant causing it to harden and appear misshapen. It can sometimes cause discomfort for patients and in these cases a removal and/or replacement is often required.
In rare cases, the implant may develop a tear or leak. Depending on your case, Dr Richardson will determine if a removal and replacement is necessary.
How does Dr. Richardson perform the surgery?
Brisbane plastic surgeon, Dr. Richardson removes breast implants regularly. Firstly, he makes a small incision in the area under the inframammary fold (usually where the implant was originally inserted). Secondly, he either removes the whole breast implant capsule, or simply removes the implant. You can find out more about these processes here. If you are undergoing a replacement, Dr. Richardson will reshape the breast pocket, remove existing implants and insert the new implant you have chosen.
It is of the utmost importance to adhere to the advised recovery instructions to ensure no future complications arise, and your breasts should be monitored to ensure proper healing.
Removing breast implants should not be an unfortunate event. It is a common procedure that helps women maintain their body image for even longer. Call our offices on 07 3268 3774 to learn more about the procedure, or contact us online to schedule a consultation.
